Chapter 13: If Not You, Who?

He dozed after that until the phone woke him. The clock read 6:46. He guessed that he’d been asleep for a little over an hour. Annoyed and groggy, he reached over for the phone and answered angrily, “Yeah?”

Frank’s voice urgently commanded, “Turn on the TV.” He hung up without saying more. Michael hurriedly jumped out of bed, his head spinning a bit from the rapid movement, found the remote and watched horrified, reeling, along with the rest of America and much of the world.

For Michael, as if the awfulness of it was not enough, the memory of Rose’s prophecies stabbed him. They had been difficult in the hypothetical. In reality, the images were devastating, almost crippling. He knew what was coming next, and next, and next. He hoped the sequence would be wrong. It wasn’t. Not every detail was exact, but, he thought uncomfortably, “Too close.” The date was September 11, 2001.

Michael’s reaction to September 11th deviated from most in that it confirmed the reality and the importance of the prophecies. As America and the world entered a new phase, Michael turned to a different chapter of his life. Convinced that the luxury of time he had taken for the inner search of his mystical experiences had crumbled along with the Twin Towers, he felt compelled to action.

He could recall Rose’s words verbatim. It was as if she were sitting there on the mattress talking to him at this very moment, “…knowing about and looking out for your own soul is of critical importance, especially now. It might be the whole point. And though I really prefer not to be put in the position of having to tell you this, there’s still a lot you can do about that. Looking out for your physical interests on this planet at this time—well, that’s another matter altogether. I suppose it’s somewhat important too, but that’s your responsibility, not mine.”

And the other voice that spoke after the four directions ritual had said, “If not you, who? If not now, when?” Michael, now certain that it must have been a call to action, to assume the mantle of responsibility, to put others’ and the world’s good above his own desires, exclaimed, “Damn! I missed it completely.”

Rose had told him she didn’t like prophecy despite her mission. She had, nevertheless, related them in general groupings: climate change leading to drastic weather conditions, environmental disasters and mass migrations leading to wars between countries, violence erupting between citizens and citizens and between citizens and governments in many of the cities of the world and across borders, including many more terrorist acts. There could be rampant disease, world-wide economic depression and widespread starvation. The only one she had given to him in vivid detail was the sequence of events of 9/11. He considered it likely she had done that so he would recognize the accuracy of the prophecies. He supposed since she had known so much about his past, she probably knew his future too.
